@gurudra2

Of course! Welcome back to the world of RHEL.

Think of it like this: you know how to drive a car, but now the cars have automatic transmissions, GPS, and new dashboard computers. The engine and wheels are the same, but how you interact with them has been modernized.

Here’s the simple path

What's New? The biggest change is systemd, which replaced the old init system for starting services. The yum command has been updated to dnf. Most importantly, the industry is now focused on automation with Ansible and containers (using Podman).

Your Game Plan:

Get a free developer copy of the latest RHEL from Red Hat's website and play around with it.

Focus on learning systemd and Ansible first.

Aim for the updated RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) certification. It’s the best way to prove your skills are current.

Your background in teaching RHEL is a unique advantage. It demonstrates a deep understanding of the fundamentals and an ability to explain complex topics. By updating your technical skills and earning current certifications, you can confidently re-enter the RHEL.

Here is the link to the documentation for RHEL 10, which is the next major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

You can definitely rejoin the RHEL world! Out of curiosity, were you teaching RHEL 5 through a Red Hat partner, in academia, or as a Red Hatter?

Hello @gurudra2 and welcome back to the world of Linux !

Since, even a complete newbie can join RHEL trend from anywhere in the world, yours familiarity with RHEL 5 actually makes it easier , rather better to dive in the latest RHEL trend.

The core Linux skills you have are still very much needed. Things like the file system, shell, and permissions haven't changed.

However, modern RHEL has added many new tools. You will now use systemd and dnf, along with new features for SELinux and Parted for disk partition. Containers , Ansible and cloud integration are also a big focus.

Your foundational knowledge is a strong starting point. You will just need to learn these new tools and modern workflows.

Check out this summary specially curate for you to point main focus areas for you :

Key Upgrades to Focus On

  • The System's "Engine":You will notice a big change in how the system starts up and manages services. RHEL 5 used SysV init, but RHEL 10 now uses systemd and journald for a faster, more modern approach.

  • Managing Software:The old yum and rpm combination has been replaced by dnf. You will also see something called "application streams" (AppStream), which lets you use different versions of software on the same OS more easily.

  • Hardware and Core Software:RHEL 10 runs on a much newer kernel (6.12) and supports modern hardware, including x86-64-v3, ARM64, and IBM Power systems. There is even a preview for RISC-V.

  • Security:RHEL has become even more secure. It features an improved SELinux, post-quantum cryptography, encrypted DNS, and full compliance with FIPS and TLS 1.3 standards.

  • Containers: This is a huge area of change. You wll now work with tools like Podman and Buildah for managing containers, as well as new features for creating immutable images and orchestration.

  • AI-Powered Help: RHEL 10 includes a new feature called RHEL Lightspeed. It's an AI assistant that can help you with common tasks like parsing logs and troubleshooting issues directly from the command line ( more than a man page ).

  • Automated Administration: Administration is now much more automated. You will find expanded system roles, an improved web console, RHEL Insights for better planning, and new automation capabilities with Ansible.

These are for starters. You know where you can find the learning - our recommended training courses RH124 & RH134 are ready to take you to your exciting and enriching journey towards upgrading RHEL 5 to 10 in your skillset.

Do let us know if you need any help on your new learning journey!
