A periodic course on how much material is need to keep the IT industry and computer systems running : water, electricity, minerals, etc...
To avoid the simple idea that IT is dematerialized and in a void removed from reality.

My idea is very simple, but it could have a very important effect globally if indeed all of us who work in IT applied it.
I believe that if each one of us took care to set power-saving settings on the devices of our loved ones, friends and relatives, it would help lower the total energy demand and reduce waste.
Most people who use electronic devices have no knowledge and familiarity with the settings of these tools, whereas for those of us who do it for work, these topics are very simple and with a little effort we could make a difference.
All operating systems for PCs, tablets and smartphones have energy-saving settings.
For example, my smartphone, once it turned three years old, started to run out of power faster than when it was new. Instead of replacing it, I tried to activate the energy saver and now after a year I still use it and the battery life is sufficient.
I suggested to a friend of mine to do the same because we bought the smartphone at the same time and I helped him to activate this setting.
TVs also have a setting to switch off automatically after a period of use, which for example avoids leaving them on when falling asleep on the sofa.
I have only given a few examples, but what I mean is that if all of us computer scientists made an effort to help those close to us to configure their devices to save energy, in my opinion there would be a great reduction in energy consumption, in addition to which the devices would last longer and this would also lead to a reduction in waste.
I am sure that some advertising experts could simply run a campaign directed at us computer scientists to make us realise how much influence this small effort could have.
- Work remotely, attend on-line events only, there is no need to travel far and often, it kills the environment. Cities and downtowns are the humanity past.
- Re-use old hardware, avoid purchasing new servers as long as possible. Install Linux whenever and wherever you can - 10-15-20 year old machines will still do their job.
- Help with on-line business. Brick-and-mortar stores must go.
