Depends on when... It ranged from Paleontologist, to video game designer, to airforce pilot, to astronaut. Sales Engineer sounds kind of boring compared to them but it worked out ok.

I wanted to be a lot of things as a child, but the one which I tried and still like a lot is working with cars. Unfortunately my math skills were not good enough to finish the Mechanical Engineering course, so I moved to the thing I do best, working with computers!

Well, about the age of 13, I decided that wanted to become a Computer Systems Engineer. Never saw a computer before, and of course, never used one. When I came of age, Computer Engineering was a long course, so I choose to become a Computer Programmer. It was a 3 year course, so I can land a job faster, and allowed me to work also. At the time I was finishing my studies, was starting to use Linux, and became involved in infrastructure and system administration. 20 years from that time I'm a Sysadmin doing DevOps and SRE and happy with that.

The career I wanted as a child had absolutely nothing to do with technology. I wanted to be an athlete - more specifically a football player. What I'm doing now is performing in the role of an educator. The only similarity I can see between my fantasy of being a football player, and my actual vocation of educator, is that I have an audience (a lot smaller of course), and seasons (2, maybe 3 each year).

When I was little, I wanted to be an actress. I was in the theater group all through school. That wasn't practical though, so I got a degree in psychology.
I was a social worker for 10 years before making my way into tech. I'm now on a team that trains other teams to use technology, which allows me to both "perform" and guide.

I think at first I wanted to be a footballer, but while in college studying engineering, it became obvious I wasn't going to be a footballer at least not a professional one. So good thing I had the backup plan and graduated and been fortunate to have a pretty good career in engineering and technology.
