RHEL Lightspeed: AI That Speaks Linux

Newbies and seasoned Linux admins alike know this very well :- a man page or documentation isn’t always enough. You crave something extra that is a pro by your side, offering real-time expert comments, warnings, and “watch out” insights. You want help that feels alive, not generic.

AND you want it by your side and at your terminal !!!

Here, behold !  RHEL Lightspeed’s Command‑Line Assistant an AI companion that brings seasoned sysadmin wisdom right into your shell. It’s like having a veteran mentor watching over your shoulder, guiding your every step with contextual advice.

Whether you are Fixing config typos at 2 a.m. or SELinux  blocking your app

You notice “Porrt” in sshd_config, ask the assistant, and it not only spots the typo but it gives you the exact sed command to fix it.

Port 12345 isn’t opening? Lightspeed explains the AVC denial and walks you through semanage, chcon, or even audit2allow to resolve it.

Lightspeed’s command-line assistant taps into Red Hat’s own knowledge base eg. KCS articles, official RHEL docs, and more to lend real-time help. It does much more than answer simple questions:

  • It clarifies RHEL commands
  • Troubleshoots issues and misconfigurations
  • Explains log entries
  • Offers tailored recommendations

You can flow through interactive sessions , run a command, then immediately ask for help interpreting its output or suggestions for your next step.

To use the command-line assistant, you must be running a subscribed system. You can use the subscription-manager tool to manage system subscriptions. RHEL 10.0 and RHEL 9.6 and later versions are supported.

The first time that you use the command-line assistant, install the command-line-assistant package:

See the scope of help that you got at your fingertips and at your own terminal just become HUGE!

How Lightspeed Treats Your Data

This is a crucial part of the architecture:

  • No system introspection happens by default. The assistant does not know your free memory, CPU load, or installed services unless you feed it.

  • Your queries are sent to the backend (IBM's watsonx-powered LLM) as structured messages.

  • Anything you input , including command output or file contents is fair game for logging and analysis by Red Hat.

So, Avoid entering sensitive data. This isn’t encrypted local inference.
