Well, it says here that you should be able to remove a special permission using:

chmod 0770 example

This isn't true. One should use:

# in simbolic
chmod g-s example

# or, in octal
chmod 00770 example
chmod =770 example

You are right about removing the special permissions from directories require extra leading 0 :  man chmod :
