Red Hat System Administration II Chap.10: Controlling the Boot Process Section 10.4 Exercise

Jump to solution

Hi,

I followed the steps from Exercise 10.4:

  • SSH to servera

  • Switched to root using sudo -i

  • Pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del in the console keyboard and selected Restart

  • Interrupted the boot process by pressing any key except Enter

  • Appended rd.break at the end of the linux line

However, after this, the server stays on the message:

Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok

It has been stuck there for more than 20 minutes, and I am unable to complete the lab exercise.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

Since the console is frozen, try a hard reboot from the lab portal.
To prevent it from happening again, don’t press keys too quickly after rebooting and let the GRUB screen appear fully before editing

On the lab page, under the actions for the respective VM, you can either click Shutdown to gracefully shut down the virtual machine while preserving disk contents, or click Power Off to forcefully shut down the virtual machine, still preserving disk contents. I hope this screenshot helps clarify

Thank you, Tudor.

In this scenario, the GRUB menu doesn’t wait for too long, and I need to press a key very quickly in order to edit the current entry.

I’m not sure how to perform a hard reboot from the lab portal, as all I can see is this screen, and there are no options available for rebooting.

I would appreciate any help.

I needed to use the console of servera as mentioned in the exercise.
Since I had never used it before and had only worked with the terminal, I wasn’t exactly sure what was meant.
However, I’ve now completed the exercise, and it was easy!

Thank you so much for your help, Tudor.

@doinita apart from the technique explained by @TudorRaduta , ie , the VM actions menu from where you can shutdown or power off - there is another way to trigger a ctrl+alt+delete from the vnc console , attaching a screenshot. 06hCxv56Yw.png
