Day2:

Our goal is to make an RH Academy developer and engineer understand and embraces open-source, Linux. Appreciate learners write a small article here on the community and earn badges!

Today your goal is to know the following :

  1. How Linux is different from other operating systems?
  2. Why do a Developer and Coder need to know Linux?
  3. Who is owning Linux and How a Linux distribution works?

How Linux distribution was created?

As you progress learning Red Hat Linux and RHCSA curriculum, following can be answered

  1. Do I still need to know or work on a Unix platform?
  2. How Linux is packaged and distributed?
  3. How Linux system for a developer critical to protect?
  4. What commands a Developer must know?
  5. How to work on network , firewall, load balancers?
  6. How to install Linux?
  7. How to install an application on Linux?
  8. How to contribute on a Linux kernel?

After you are an RHCSA (hoping 2 weeks good enough), I should be expecting you produce a small project like :

1. How to create a bootable USB drive for Linux

2. Linux rescue disk or program restoring a corrupt Linux system

3. Linux for disability, develop a special software

4. Harden or secure a Linux system (especially developer system running as root)

I would like to thank @dipankar, Ankush and Biswajeet sir for yesterday's session. This is how I would express my Day 2 learning.

Linux has always been an interesting topic but after today's session, after knowing its functioning, its applications, my respect for the community is beyond the roofs.

Linux is everywhere, literally anything that has processors ranging from mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, cars, etc might be running on a Linux kernel. This proves how agile and fluid Linux is due to its open-source culture which makes it different from other operating systems.

Linux being open source at first raises questions upon its security but interestingly Linux environment is a better hedge against attacks by hackers or viruses than any other monoculture operating system. Here the open-source culture plays a very important role, the passionate developers from all around the world contribute to making Linux more secure, robust, fast, and stable. This is one of the reasons why from 2018, 100% of the world's supercomputers started running on Linux.

Linux is also known for its variety of distributions (also known as distros) this is also one of the gifts of Linux being open source. Since it can be freely distributed and modified, developers started modifying the source code upon their needs and came up with different community-driven Linux distributions. Here is a link to the timeline of different Linux distributions which also depicts the parent-child relation of different distributions-

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg

Distributions are created to overcome different problems or scenarios that organizations or developers face. For example Ubuntu one of the distributions based on Debian. Debian is not complicated to use but it might be daunting for a beginner so Ubuntu was released. Kali Linux is again one of the distributions based upon Debian but used for security and penetration testing. Manjaro is known for its lightweight and popular pacman manger which is one of the distributions of Arch. POP OS is one of the distributions of Ubuntu popularly known for its Nvidia driver support which is very popular among gamers and deep learning enthusiasts.

I have personally come across and used the distributions mentioned above(To find a distribution that consumes less memory). It's scary to try a new OS for the first time but in the end, you get to learn something new from every OS.

In the end, I would request everyone to please mention the different distributions of Linux that one has come across and their experiences with it.

Day3 :

Project Management

SCQ is the best method (Situation, Challenge, Question)

S=Situation

Example : Lot of tools working in silos and producing unique result. Adds more cost to the company but the company cannot remove.

C=Challenge

Example : Time (Big Cycle time) , Money (cost more) , Outcome (Delayed)

Q=Question

Example :

How each works ?

What cost you more ?

Which is more critical ?

Do you like to try open source or alternative ?

Write user stories

Borrowing from agile terminology, action-oriented documentation is often based on user stories. A user story is a definition of a process whereby a goal is accomplished. In agile development, user stories are employed to justify why any effort should be expended towards implementing new features or modifying existing ones and to describe the use of the feature from a user's point of view.

Most commonly, the following template is used for identifying user stories: As <type of user>, I want <what?>, so that <why?>.

For example, a user story can look like this:

As an administrator, I want to be able to connect to a server, so that I can manage user accounts.
