RHA Labs as VMs?

Hey All,

Is it possible, or has anyone done any work, to get the Dual-Boot labs working as OVAs? My IT department is hesitant to allow dual-booting, but they would allow VMs using something like VirtualBox on local machines. Is this possible or allowed? If so, would it be possible to have the OVAs hosted via FTP downloads?

(For REL8 labs)

I tested adding parameters to FC33 host kernel without success. Command virt-host-validate and dmesg output was same as before parameters.

My FC33 host system have passed IOMMU-test.

QEMU: Checking if IOMMU is enabled by kernel : PASS

Foudation0 haven't passed IOMMU-test. I tested parameters also with Foundation0 without success.

I have enabled CPU host-passthrough in Virt Machine Manager.

Well, this is where nested virtualization starts. Your bare metal hypervisor (FC33) had passed the test with success. And now your virtualized hypervisor has to pass with success. Remember that, kiosk machine is also a hypervisor and that's why you need to apply those kernel settings for the kiosk as well. If those settings are not available in the grub config then virt-host-validate will throw warnings again.

I have tested same parameters in Foundation0 and in my FC33 host computer.

Sorry that I couldn't reply your questions with a complete answer (but for me, it's hard to remember everything in a row, especially in these days), but as I remember also there is one more option to seek in BIOS settings.

Is there an option to enable SVM in the BIOS of your FC33 workstation? If yes, please enable it.

After that you can check it if it's enabled or not by issuing lscpu|grep svm.

For now that's all that I could suggest for you and maybe it's a hardware problem or virtualization software problem. I can't tell you more about what's going wrong because rest of the setup of my lab environment is same as yours except hardware and virtualization layer.

I've tried to install both RH124 and RH134 form the usb-8.2-40G-rhce8-r2020120415.img file.

Everything seems to go OK (including the rht-verify-f0 check) -- until I start the various VMs (bastion, workstation, servera, etc.)

When they start, they all hang up at: Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok

I've tried this using Workstation 15.x and Workstation 10.x hardware settings as well as using RHEL 8 7 64-bit and RHEL 8 64 bit as "blank" virtual machines. (I have no intention to distributing any OVF or OVA files at this time.)

I'm using VMware Workstation Pro 15.5.6 build-15341506

Any help / suggestions? (I've tried it IOMMU turned on, and off, when using Workstation 15.x.)

Hi,

If you can start the vms and just stuck with the "Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok" message, then you don't have a problem with the virtualization I think.

This problem usually occurs when the classroom vm is not powered on or not reachable by the lab vms or by kiosks.

After 'rht-verify-f0 check' please don't forget to run 'rht-f0finish'.

Then ssh to classroom vm as root and run 'rht-verify-classroom'.

If your classroom vm is up and running, and you are not able to ping or ssh to it, then you need to check the virtual network settings for your lab environment.

Classroom vm's ip addresses must be reachable by every kiosk machine including foundation0 in order to install kiosks and run lab vms inside kiosks.

@mehmetoren

Thanks for that... The video didn't mention the rht-f0finish -- so the problem was than classroom wasn't started.

[Embarassingly, I've always let my lab techs set up the physical classroom, so I've not done these steps before. I'm glad to have done them now.]

I set up a new one completely from scratch and (so far), it is working like a peach.

You can also try to reset VMs with commands:

rht-vmctl reset workstation

rht-vmctl reset servera

rht-vmctl reset serverb

rht-vmctl reset classroom

Internal network connections are important. You need two network interfaces in VMware Workstation.

sorry for the irrelevant message, but can you please confirm me from where can i have the image,

i have completed RH199 Redhat's RHCSA Official Training, now to practice at home  and to follow the Student Workbook i really miss their Lab environment the academy is not providing us any image,

i have also send an email to training @ redhat . com but they are also not responding to it

can you please guide me how can i get the image so i can practice at home before the exam :/

is there any cloud service provided by Redhat for this or anything else, actually i can practice on normal Redhat machine but it takes too much to prepare the lab according to workbook i have to create users sometimes install some packages and do other configuration so it would be really handy if they provide us the Lab Machine (Bastion, Servera, Serverb, Workstation, Utility & Classroom) images
