Re: RHLS Experience

Hey, @Lisenet,

I only agree with your argument about the price in the case you never intended taking more than one single Red Hat course in the coming year.

List prices for our trainings are on the order of about £2000, so the moment you have plans on taking two or more, RHLS becomes a very tempting option. On your own time, at your own pace, you get access to every single Red Hat course out there. How's that for choice? Add a grand on top of it, and you also get five exams and some retakes, not to mention the other features of standard!

I do agree a 15-day (or so) preview would be a nice option to have. In the mean time, there are a couple of videos you can have a look at to get an idea of how it works and what the actual differences between basic and standard are:

Re: RHLS Experience

@oldbenkothanks.

RHLS is worth the money if you intend to take three or more courses per year. VAT in the UK is 20%, meaning that I'd have to pay £5160 for a Basic subscription, or an eye-watering £6600 for Standard. That's not just a grand on top, that's almost a grand an a half out of my own pocket. Again, unless your employer is willing to cover the cost, this is very expensive.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that there is no value in RHLS, the opposite - there is. However, RHLS contains so many Red Hat courses that it simply cannot be cheap. And I understand that.

What would be great is to have an option to purchase a "light" version of RHLS where you pick 5 courses and that's it. It would be perfect for those taking the RHCA route and would cost less compared to what the price is at the moment.

Re: RHLS Experience

Another way of improving the experience could be by adding tags to the courses in a similar way you can to the discussions here. There could be tags based on the language of the courses, the products the course covers and/or level of experience required.

Filters could be added to the search to only show courses based on a particular product, for example. Additionally a user preference could be added to exclude or only include certain tags, such as only show content tagged with "english".

Re: RHLS Experience

As an instructor, I love the option of quickly spinning up a classroom environment to test an exercise, to come up with a workaround for a problem, or to just refresh my memory. Early access is fundamental for both helping out with QA during course development and staying up to speed with new materials - that way, when the course is released, we are ready to rock it!

I also agree very strongly with the point @rgdacosta made about the difference we make as instructors. I would very much suggest students to consider RHLS when they have a large project that will require them to come back again and again and learn additional skills at their own convenience as they go along, or for any other reason intend to invest in acquiring broad knowledge of open-source technologies over a year.

Conveying deep understanding of a multidisciplinary subject and/or learning in a group are best done in a live training though, and this is where our instructors' personal approach and intuition are priceless.

Re: RHLS Experience

Hi there

I am using RHLS for about 6 monts.

All in all int works good if you work with full-HD dual head workstation.

Sometimes keyboard copy into workstation (or even typing) is hanging and repeating characters, which leads to unwanted results.

Direct SSH access into the LABs would be great and is a must from my point of view ... hey its a LAB  not a banking env!?

Anyway. Screen resolution of Workstation-VM is a pain in the ...
I figured out this one liner to change to my needs.
Can you please include this into the Workstation-VM, would be great?
Even better would be an HTML5 client that follows the browser size like thinlinc does.
Here the line:

 RES=1920x1030 ; SCREEN=$(xrandr | grep ' connected ' | cut -d' ' -f1 | head -1) ; xrandr --newmode $RES $(cvt $(echo $RES | tr 'x' ' ') | grep Modeline | cut -d ' ' -f3-) ; xrandr --addmode $SCREEN $RES ; xrandr --output $SCREEN --mode $RES

You can also find a better script here:

Re: RHLS Experience

The only drawback of RHLS is a student cannot ask a question if he has any unlike in a real class room. However this community page bridges that gap. Hopefully this community page would turn out to be good repository for RHLS subscribers and all with quality answers to queries, A lot of learning happens interacting with peers which one may miss in a virtual classroom. Learning being a continous process all methodolgies do add up and RHLS is a fantastic concept for travel constrained.

Re: RHLS Experience

Hi,
My experience is more purchase perspective.
I was very much looking at to subscribe for one year but when we saw the price, I couldn’t get a ROI to justify this investment.
For a non IT company it is very difficult to justify this price especially when you see it could be 4 times less in different counties.

I am sure courses are very good quality, I always enjoyed to read clear red hat courses material but well no candy for me !

That would help if red hat give some helpful argument or support us to cross financial firewall.

Re: RHLS Experience

As a current RHLS subscriber (along with most of my team), we like having the access to training classes from wherever we are at any time during the year.  The included exams that come along with the Standard subscription are a plus for my company as well.

One of the common items I hear from my team about RHLS is the difficutly in getting reports on what trainings we have done for management, along with a couple minor navigation issues.

Re: RHLS Experience

I've seen the complaint that to do anything in a class, you have to use the window with the full desktop environment. I.e. if I'm studying for RHEL admin exam, e.g. RHCE, I still have to open the terminal within the ROLE window and do all my commands from there.

It'd be excellend if ROLE also offered remote SSH sessions, where I could just connect and do everything from my commandline, thus eliminating the overhead of the desktop environment.

As such, some machines could be simply headless. This is a functionality provided by linuxacademy afaik Smiley Happy.
