RHLS book download

Hello,

Earlier  this year I have downloaded a book for Openshift DO380, however it was version 3.6, now it is version 3.9. if I download it again, would that be considered two downloads or one? as it is the same course just updated. I belive it should be considered as one.

Also, how do I check which books I have downloaded so far? in case I deleted one by mistake, can I download again?

Re: RHLS book download

Walid,

Downoading a newer version of the same course does not charge your 10 e-book limit.

Yes you can download books you've downloaded in the past without encountering a charge on your 10 e-book limit.  Though I don't know of a place where the list of books you've generated and downloaded is availabe to you.

I'll write up an enahncement request (though it will likely be a while to get it done) to add this to the reporting we offer to users.

Re: RHLS book download

Also, do you not mean DO280?

The latest version of DO380 is still based on OCP 3.6

Re: RHLS book download

On the topic of student guide downloads. Is anyone else having an issue, where after their subscription was renewed, the 10 student-guide download limit was not reset? I've been stuck like that for the past two months into my latest renewal, I can't download previously downloaded student guides or new guides and the only feedback I received so far is that it's a bug.

Re: RHLS book download

@Anthony,

When the developer created the code for this limit, he was given the requirement "No more than 10 downloads a year"  How that should have read is "No more than 10 downloads in 1 subscription period."  Sadly, as a result, he wrote the code exactly has the requirement stated, he looks from today, back across the last calendar year, to figure out how many manuals have been generated and downloaded in the last year, if it is 10, then new book generations are prohibited.

I've got a defect open with the developer on this, however, we don't handle renewals as crisply as we should.  I'm working on getting a variety of oddities like this together so we can bang them out in a single development sprint.  We recently got some 'hair on fire' priorities from higher up, so it might be a minute for us to get this completed.  HOWEVER, I have provided a workaround to our support staff, because, frankly, you should never be 'stuck' because of our problem.  If you're having a problem generating a specific book, open a support case against it, and the support engineers will handle it using the workaround procedure.

You should also open a case for having issues downloading previously downloaded things.  This is the first I'm hearing of a problem there, and I have a feeling that the actual issue is different and more nuanced than the process logic I described above.

Re: RHLS book download

@Scott

Sorry for the length of time between replies, I started having an even bigger issue with RHLS and stopped using the subscription nearly as much as I had been. I appreciate the feedback you gave me, it was a lot more detailed and understandable than the replies I had been receiving from support, which was simply "it's a bug". For the last six weeks, in addition to the student guide download from the non-VC course bug, I have a new one. Now, I can't download any VC guides, except three courses that I've already taken. It doesn't make much sense to me, why I can still download those three guides, when all other VC course material results in "Download error - Book not found". I inspected the traffic when this occurs and it looks like I'm getting a "403 (FORBIDDEN)" error and below that the output is: subscription_quota_exceeded. That's on nearly every VC course for me, which is making it pretty frustrating taking courses, as everytime I switch to a new topic, I need to email support for them to send me the guide. Have you heard of this happening to anyone else, not being able to download VC course guides?

Thanks again for the explanation above, I've also escalated this case with my companies Redhat rep, although it hasn't gotten anywhere. There's  an image below, of what happens upon VC/non-VC course guide downloads.

Best Regards,

Anthony

Re: RHLS book download

hi  ,

I also got same message and sent RHLS team a message, then got a response. I sent an email 20 days back and didn’t get a reply.

Note : while purchasing, time was uninformed

Finally I got this subscription with a discounted price.

My sincere thanks to Red Hat team for the good opportunity (RHLS)  to learn .

Re: RHLS book download

@AnkitDoneria & others,

I took a look at the case, and the message you're getting from support is accurate, though it looks like they're not describing to your expectation, what "the bug" is.  Allow me to elaborate.

When we started offering PDF download availability for all courses, there were concerns with subscribers pulling e-books for all courses.  We looked at other, popular subscription services and they also have gates in place to provide limits on how much 'data takeaway' users are able to have.  Some of them have much, much more elaborate e-book management including custom apps to control the library and a variety of other methods for controlling a user's available 'library' of content.

We took a simpler approach to manage this, and I, when we were putting together how this works, we wanted to put limits into place to prevent abusive or non-training related behavior.  What we put into place is a limit of 10 course PDF e-books.  As stated earlier, we define a course PDF as one that is independent of version or language.  So with the recent CL210 update to v13, if someone had already downloaded the CL210v10 pdf, they could get a v13 pdf without having the document counted against their limit.

Ok, so now to 'the bug'.  When the developer who put the code into place wrote it, he did so where he looked back over the last 1 year to determine if someone had hit this limit of 10 PDF course generations.  Unfortunately, he did not account for the logic that if someone renews their subscription, this should reset their usage against the limit.  As an example, lets say that someone's subscription runs June 2017 - June 2018, and this user renewed in June 2018 so that their subscription now expires June 2019 and is active and in good standing.  In April - May, this subscriber generated 6 course PDFs.  Then in August (after their renewal) they generated another 4 PDFs.  Because all 10 of these are within the same 12 month period (independent of their renewal) when the user tries to generate another PDF in November, it's going to be seen by the limit code as the 11th PDF generation request.  Consequently it's going to fail and report that the user is at their limit.

I've already logged a defect against this behavior, and now we're just waiting for a developer to be assigned to resolve it.

@Anthony, VC has been operating on the older system and it was in their work-effort to move to the newer PDF generation API.  I have a feeling that this happened with their most recent release, but they're not handling the error condition of the 'requests more than 10' very well.  Further, now that they're using the same API, they're subject to the same bug that I described above.  VC team is separate from the subscription and content UI team, support is probably the best way to continue to move the issue forward.
