Hello everyone, I've been associated with electronics, computers and networking since High School, about 1965. I'm retired now, living a really great life. I decided to join the Redhat community because I agree with "Open Source" and I whole-heartedly support Redhat's effort in schools and Universities. Without Education we have nothing. So, Thank you Redhat and Redhat Community for all the support you give to education and our up-and-coming young people. One of my retirement projects is to write about my Career and my vision of what happened, and what my part in all this was. I'm doing it because I was never a good writer, specifying out a system came easy most of the time. But expressing myself, my aspirations, my thoughts-good or bad about a system or project was hard to the point that it just did not happen much. By-the-way, that is precisely on of the points I hope To make with my present writing. Your work, your project, your system is more than just algorithms, code, parts and specifications. Everything that went into making you, your education, environment, everything that shapes your thoughts are put in everything you do. I started my career as a technician in the Navy. My responsibility for over 10 years was the Naval Technology Data System (NTDS). I received several commendations, not for bravery but for going above and beyond to keep the system working. After 10 years I decided I wanted to do something different and worked anther 20 years on various networks such as ARPA Net, World-Wide Military Command System and others. My last position was at East Carolina University where I managed a state-wide university videoconferencing network. My interest today is not in what we made, but why we made it; How those machines affected culture and society and how culture and society influence the next generation of machines...What does a ZX81 have to do with "Watson"? or Did the telegraph have any influence on modern technology such as the Chromebook? Well, that's the short version of Ken Harbit.
