Hello Community,
I'd like to get your opinion, is it possible to upgrade the OS before upgrading Satellite, Let's say my Satellite server is on rhel8 and I want to upgrade to rhel9 or should I upgrade satellite to the latest supported version first ?
Thank you
Hello @Meher_Askri
Let me answer your question inline
> I'd like to get your opinion, is it possible to upgrade the OS before upgrading Satellite,
Think about Satellite as an appliance, you need to update all together using satellite-maintain, this will update Satellite product and also your BaseOS
> Let's say my Satellite server is on rhel8 and I want to upgrade to rhel9 or should I upgrade satellite to the latest supported version first ?
In this case, we are talking about Upgrade of your BaseOS, which is a bit different (major versions).
With that said, let's imagine that you are on Satellite 6.15@rhel8 (supported version), then in order to upgrade, you can proceed as below
6.15@rhel8 -> 6.16@rhel8 -> (LEAPP or Backup @rhel8 and Restore @rhel9) -> 6.16@rhel9 -> 6.17@rhel9 -> 6.17@rhel9
As we can see above, once you reach 6.16, there is no way to move to 6.17, unless you upgrade your BaseOS from rhel8 to rhel9, and you can achieve it via leapp or backup/restore. Both methods are available in our documentation.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
