bash search history ctrl-r resets the lab session

if I want to repeat a command from my history I do ctrl-r in bash and go back and search for old commands as I type or more ctrl-r, the workstation lab, every time  I do this, it disconnects the lab, and sometimes, I can not type any longer, had to close the terminal and open another terminal, a work around is to "set -o vi" and search back using vi escape sequenc /. but I am used to emacs search, anyone have experienced this or have a solution to this? this happend to me today on the DO380 lab
