OpenShift Administration exam (EX280) materials

Hi gurus

I'm training for exam EX280. The d180 and do280 materials are enough ?

or  DO I need to complete  the  DO288 as well?

Hi,

The topics covered in DO180 and DO280 course should be suffecient to clear EX280 exam. You could also verify the same by going throught the exam objective page here and comparing the same with DO180 and DO280 course objectives.

The EX280 exam and the DO180/DO280 track were designed to meet the same objectives (OpenShift administration) while the DO288 course was designed for a different track (OpenShift development). Whoever takes DO288 is recommended to take DO180 first to learn fundamentals about containers, but if your target is EX280 you should not need DO288.

Any exposure to additional guided exercises around building applications for OpenShift will greatly benefit the EX280 exam candidate. This includes guided exercises from DO288.

As it has been mentioned, DO288 is not a recommended course for taking EX280, but in my experience in delivering the EX280 exam, I see the value in this approach.

Have a look at the exam objectives, and cross-reference them to what is in DO288.

Thank you all for valuable feedback. One more questions. I'm practicing labs exercise. There some steps which are in bash script and would be performed by running it.

e.g. nfs share are in bash script,  pvc in bash script. 

. e.g.   /DO280/labs/install-metrics/node-metrics.sh

These steps are would be in bash script in EX280 questions?

Hi Turgunbek,

I'd say inspect each of those scripts and each of those YAML or JSON files, and make sure you understand them. Courses may use these to help you build complex scenarios, sometimes more complex that can be done in an exam, or just to make these scenarios look more interesting.

In the exam you are expected to be able to perform any action by yourself, with the help of product documentation. If you use oc commands, yaml files, the web console, it is your choice as long as you met the requirements for each task stated in the exam.

The exam could provide you (I'm not saying it will) with scripts and YAML files to start a task, but these may be incomplete or incorrect, and in this case you'd expected to be able to complete/fix them.

Hi Fernando,

In the objectives I do not see anything related to installing openshift cluster.

So does that mean we would get the openshift installed by default during the examination?

I just checked the objectives and I don't see installation as one of them, so your assumption looks right. Anyway specific questions about exams and objectives are best answered by the certification team, using the form at:

The v4 EX280 does not include installing OpenShift, as v3 exams did, and the current DO180/DO280/DO380 courses do not either. There's a number of reasons Red Hat made this change, such as:

  • An increasing number of customers are adopting managed OpenShift clusters from Red Hat (OpenShift Dedicated), Azure ARO), Amazon (ROSA), and IBM Cloud. These customers will never need to learn how to install OpenShift.
  • Installing OpenShift for a production environment requires extensive Kubernetes administration skills so you can match your target environment storage, networking, and security capabilities. The current (v4.x) OpenShift installer uses Kubernetes resources and Kubernetes operators so anyone new to OpenShift would not be able to perform anything other than a default installation in a cloud provider -- and that assuming he has a cloud provider account that matches the requirements of running OpenShift. He would perform an installation as a "black box" that he wouldn't be able to customize nor troubleshoot if installation fails.
  • There's no "one size fits all" OpenShift environment. As much as OpenShift installer providers full stack automation for a number of environments, these oppionated defaults will not be good for a number of customers that will requre the user-provisioned infrastructure alternative.
  • Installing an OpenShift cluster is not that a frequent task, but other tasks such as setting up RBAC permissions, Network Policies, and troubeshooting application deployments are much more frequent, so to provide best use of the available time, Red Hat decided to drop installation and use that time to cover more day-to-day OpenShift and Kubernetes administration tasks.
  • Red Hat observed that most organizations have a core engineering team that deploys OpenShift clusters, and sets up repeatable processes around governance and configuguration management, and larger teams performing day to day cluster administration. It makes sense that earlier courses such as DO280 focus on the needs of these larger teams, and more advanced courses such a DO380 focus on the needs of the core team.

If you need skills about installing OpenShift Red Hat offers DO32 that teaches how to install OpenShift using the full-stack automation and user provisioned installation workflows, and teaches about customizations required and avaible in a number of targets such a AWS and VMWare. It includes hands-on on installing a "bare-metal" custer and videos demonstrating actual beginning-to-end installations on other targets.
