If there are calm moments during work hours, I take the opportunity to study or delve into topics that can help me in my job and career. I strive to stay informed about the latest technological advancements. I dedicate at least 4 hours during the week, outside of work hours, to study and deepen my knowledge, also with the help of a home lab with virtual machines. I don't add extra hours to what I've planned to study and I dedicate the rest of my time to my family. I don't study on weekends, which I dedicate entirely to my family and hobbies

Managing a tech career while maintaining a healthy work-life balance requires a mix of discipline, prioritization, and smart work habits.

Set Clear Boundaries – Define work hours and stick to them. Avoid checking emails or Slack messages outside of work unless absolutely necessary.

Prioritize Tasks – Use productivity techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix or Pomodoro Technique to focus on high-impact tasks.

Take Breaks – Short breaks improve focus and prevent burnout. Try the 90-minute work cycle followed by a break.

Use Automation & Delegation – Automate repetitive tasks with scripts or tools and delegate non-essential work when possible.

Stay Active – Exercise helps reduce stress and improves productivity. Even a short daily walk can make a difference.

Unplug Regularly – Set aside time for hobbies, family, and socializing. Digital detox periods help refresh the mind.

Leverage Remote & Flexible Work – If possible, take advantage of hybrid or remote work to create a schedule that suits your life.

Continuous Learning – Invest time in personal and professional growth, but don’t overcommit to extra work beyond office hours.

Communicate with Your Team – Be transparent about workload and expectations to avoid unnecessary pressure.

Practice Mindfulness & Stress Management – Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or journaling can help maintain mental clarity.

Balancing a tech career with life means setting clear boundaries and putting yourself first.

  1. Stick to set work hours and unplug afterward.
  2. Prioritize important tasks and avoid multitasking.
  3. Take breaks to recharge during the day.
  4. Say no to extra work if it harms your well-being.
  5. Stay active, enjoy hobbies, and spend time with loved ones.
  6. Disconnect from screens after work.
  7. Care for your mental health and ask for help when needed.

Remember, your health matters as much as your work.

There are several things that I included in my routine that help me detach from my work, even if it's not for long: going for a walk before starting my working day, stretching daily, avoid pc/phone screens, some physical activity, trying to be in my work station outside of my working hours the least amount of time possible, and the most important one, try to meet with friends and family (ideally outside of my home) after work. I have a mindset of "if I'm not feeling well mentally, I won't be able to work properly", so that motivates me to not skip on these "chores".

At first, I set boundaries by defining work hours and sticking to them, ensuring that work doesn’t spill into my personal time. I also prioritize tasks by focusing on what’s most important first. I make sure to take breaks throughout the day to refresh my mind and body. Ultimately, keeping a balance is about managing my time and energy, so I can excel at work while enjoying life outside of it.

maintaining a good work-life balance in a demanding tech role takes conscious effort. It’s easy to fall back into unhealthy habits, like working extra-long hours or forgetting to take breaks. That’s why you need to dedicate specific slots to looking after yourself.

* Establish boundries - Learn to say NO

* If you work late or extra, take time off to balance it out

* Have a dedicated workspace or office if working remote

* Establish healthy sleep habits

* Diet and Exercise

* Schedule important events in your life just as you schedule meetings at work.

A former manager of mine always set priorities for himself and suggested for others in this order:

  1. God
  2. Family
  3. Work

He always made it a point that Work is _not_ at the top of the list.

(No intention of turning this into a regligious discussion, the point being is that generally speaking, work shouldn't _always_ make the top of your list.  There is always another job out there...)

I stick to the work timelines most of the time barring few exceptions, when some issue or some production deployment is done outside the normal working hours.
I work from home whenever it is allowed or when it is absolutely necessary to attend to family. Shut down the work laptop during weekends.

To balance the demands of a tech career with a healthy work-life balance,I suggest to  prioritize clear boundaries, effective time management, and mindful technology use, while also prioritizing self-care, personal interests, and open communication with your employer and colleagues.

Thanks

First of all, it is important to love your work. Then the problem of separating work and personal life will not seem so difficult.

My recipe for balance is simple: clear time boundaries for each part of our lives.
