A headset is not required, no sounds comes out of the exam environment. It is required some kind of microphone (eg, internal laptop microphone) for the exam proctor to listen to the room's ambient sound (or lack thereof) to ensure no external help is being delivered.

That's not quite correct: During the setup of the exam environment you need a speaker to confirm that recordings taken from your microphone have been successfully played back at you.

That's what I think as well. If you need a mic, you'll need speakers. I don't want to use my laptop that has a built-in mic, because it has a tiny screen. Instead, I'd like to use my PC which doesn't have a built-in mic. I hope a wired headset will be fine.

This is not during the exam, it is during the compatibility test.
In general, we can say speakers are required but headset most probably is
not allowed because they may think that it can be used to get help, but it
is better to contact remote exam support to double check.
>From my perspective, I will never use a headset as there is no need for it
so no need to put something annoying for the whole exam duration with no
need. Loud speaker of the laptop is fine to hear the ring as a notification
that proctor sent something on the chat. That's it.

Thank you. I'm curious, how should I communicate with the proctor if I'm using a PC with no built-in microphone or speakers? I can hook external speakers, but the microphone is still a question to me.

All communications are through written chat. No voice interaction with the
proctor.

I usually use the internal speakers since you need to hear the alert from the proctor.

Do you mean laptop speakers?

Yes he means laptop loudspeaker which will be very sufficient to hear the
notification ring. But a Microphone, either built-in or external, is
mandatory so that the proctor can hear your background to ensure that no
one talks to you during the exam to offer help.
