The USB memory stick is not displayed and the boot system cannot be started

Jump to solution

I downloaded LIVEUSB to a USB memory stick to take a remote exam. However, after downloading, I cannot see the USB drive from the Explorer screen and cannot start the boot system. I have confirmed that the USB memory stick is recognized. I would like to know the solution.

Subj.:  The exam USB stick is not visible in File Explorer and not shown in the boot menu

Hi, all is good and as should be. There are two things to explain:

1. You do not see the USB stick after you have extracted the exam ISO on it because the exam partition is encrypted. So, the operating system does not understand it. Red Hat protects the integrity of the exam that way. I understand you are used to verifying the USB stick after copying it onto it that way, but you are not supposed to do it this time. It will decrypt while booting; it will work.

2. The USB is not offered in the boot menu, most likely because the USB booting is disabled or Secure Boot is enabled. You have to make sure Secure Boot is disabled in BIOS. It is because the live USB is not Secure Boot compliant (the bootloader is not signed by Microsoft), so it is ignored and not shown in the boot menu Remember to set it all back after the exam to boot your original OS,  You might have a Bitlocker warning. See other articles of mine for Bitlocker if you are using it in Windows. (This does not apply to Intel Macs. Macs are another story. To enable USB booting and disable Secure Boot on Intel Macs 2016-2018 you need to see Apple Startup Security Utility)
