Failed Lab #ch05s07-Lab: Create, View, and Edit Text Files

Jump to solution

Hello World!

My name is Calvin Boyles and this is my 1st post here. I'm reaching out for a lifeline because I'm facing challenges completing one of the "Vim" labs. In this particular lab I am instructed to initiate "Visual Block Mode" using the "CRT + V" command, however this command only get's me into "Visual Mode" therefore because I'm not performing instructions exactly this results in not passed status for this lab.

After researching a few solutions on the internet I found some that suggest my VIM Configuration may be incorrect. I don't want to go any deeper into troublshooting alone since this is not my area of expertise and I'm afraid of making irreversable errors.

The following solutions were found online:

"

It sounds like you’re having trouble entering Visual Block Mode with Ctrl + v in Vim. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Terminal Settings: Some terminal emulators might have Ctrl + v mapped to other functions. You can try using Ctrl + q followed by Ctrl + v to see if that works.

  2. Disable Conflicting Keybindings: If you’re using a terminal emulator or an IDE like VSCode, there might be conflicting keybindings. For example, in VSCode, you can disable the Ctrl + v keybinding by adding the following to your settings..."

@CalvinBOS Thanks for reaching out! Where are you practising this lab - in the Red Hat training labs right ? I was unable to reproduce the error you shared :

make sure  you are not in "Insert" mode in the vi editor and also the copy paste button is not enabled as shown :

when you are in vi mode , give it some time and then try ctrl v to enter into visual block mode.  If you are not able to do the same, please delete the lab and recreate a fresh lab and then retry the same or raise a support case for support in your lab.

You can also leave this exercise and move ahead if you want.

I believe I had a problem with this lab, but I was pressing shift+V until I realised I had to press CTRL+V!

Are you getting the desired action when using CTRL+V ? Is it selecting the block only? If so, then at least that is working as intended and you understand what's going on.

I don't think completing the labs counts towards anything (since the VMs can be destroyed and created). So you can likely just move onto the next excerise.

That was my experience at least, I'm sure one of the admin's can provide more information.
