In Step 1 of the instructions for this lab you are asked to redirect the output of a ls command to a file defined by a shell variable.
List the student home directory, including hidden directories and files...
Based on the wording it, it seems you are asked to do a ls -a but when you look at the solutions for the lab the vim editor is working with the output from ls -al
The rest of the vim editing instructions make no sense when you use the ls -a and I think the reason students have been using the correct output is because they are clicking the show solution button.
