Hi,
I'm trying to setup an external monitor in the exam environment and wonder how others do it ?
Firstly on my normal linux envirorments I have no issue with anything with my setup.
If I boot into the USB both the laptop and the external monitor are detected. The laptop monitor has the gui to access the exam environment.
If I mirror the screens the mouse appears on the external monitor on the same location as would correspond with the gui boxes but those gui boxes arent seen on the external monitor.
If I close the laptop lid the mouse can be seen on the external monitor but no additional boxes.
The laptop is plugged directly into the back of the laptop.
Any suggestions? I've tried booting with the monitor plugged in and without. Unplugging when its started and plugging back in again...
Thanks,
Hello @AndrewC666 since this is related to exam, I am sure someone from the exam support will respond to you here on this issue , I will still recommend it to raise it to the exam support here : https://rhtapps.redhat.com/comments
I contacted them before asking here and they didnt really have any suggestions so curious to see if any one here has any suggestions.
Thanks
Unlike your normal Linux setup, the ISO used for the exam has limited hardware compatibility and feature support. The “additional boxes” you’re referring to depend on how the exam ISO handles display rendering, so they may not appear on an external monitor even though the cursor does.
You may also want to check the Mouse and Touchpad options in the Settings screen within the exam environment.
If the cursor shows up correctly on the external monitor with the laptop lid closed and it doesn’t interfere with navigation or answering questions, you should be fine to proceed. Please note that certain display features available in a full Linux environment may not be supported in the exam ISO.
Hi @AndrewC666 , Please double-check the screen resolution on the settings screen. As per exam policy, only one display is allowed, so you'll need to close the laptop lid when using an external monitor. Ensure the display is set to the external monitor for compatibility checks.

Hello Andrew,
You can only take the exam using a single display. If you're using a laptop with an external monitor, you'll need to disable your laptop’s built-in screen by simply closing the lid. Keep in mind that this will also block the keyboard and trackpad, so you'll need to use an external keyboard and mouse.
The exam environment, which boots from the USB drive, is designed to prevent your laptop from going to sleep when you close the lid. Instead, it should disable the internal display and make the external monitor the sole primary screen.
However, there can be compatibility issues where the laptop goes to sleep anyway when closing the lid. In that case, you may have to leave the lid slightly open and manually set the display to mirror in the display settings.
Based on what you described, I suspect you’ve already tried these steps. When enabling the mirroring mode, your internal display, despite showing the mouse pointer on the external monitor as well, refuses to give up, to turn off when you close the lid, or to fully mirror to the external monitor, and remains primary, so all the pop-up windows and messages are shown there. You cannot take the exam like this, of course.
It seems to me as a compatibility issue with your graphics card and its drivers.
Potential solutions
I have a few suggestions that might resolve this issue:
Change BIOS Settings: If your laptop has both a dedicated and an integrated graphics card, you might be able to switch between them in your BIOS settings. Changing this could help with the compatibility.
Wait for a New ISO Version: If you're unable to change your BIOS settings, or if it doesn't solve the problem, you may need to wait for a new version of the Exam ISO.
Use a Different Computer: The most immediate solution would be to use a different computer for the exam.
I hope one of these options helps you move forward with your exam.
