In this lab it says to use CTRL-V to enter block mode. however in the LAB this doesnt work and just pastes the file name.
if however you use CTRL-Q this enters VISUAL BLOCK mode fine! could be worth adding the ALT command to enter VISUAL BLOCK mode

Do you have "Host Paste" enabled? (In the top right of the screen there should be a little paper. It will have a line through it if it is disabled.) If it is enabled it might be cause of this issue.
